Old Man Chords & Guitar Lesson

Welcome to my Old Man chord chart by Neil Young. Very cool song with some fairly simple chords, with the exception of the F chord, and a repetitive chord progression.

I really like Neil’s stuff for teaching beginner to beginner intermediate players as there’s always cool things to learn and embellish. This song uses a lot of 1/2 measures, so counting is very important to stay in time with the song.

If you need an easy fix for the F barre chord, you can use Fmaj7 for now.

easy f chord

Old Man Strumming Patterns:

The timing may be a little tricky for the early-stage beginners. So feel free to come back once your rhythm and timing has improved.

Now obviously this song has a pretty intricate strumming and picking pattern that we are not going to over here. I have listed a more simplified strumming pattern that works well for this song below.

Strumming 1:
1  2 + 3 4+
D DU D DU

Strumming 2:
1 + 2 +a  3 + 4 + a
BB D DU B B D DU

Chorus: |Am7 Em7 G| part

Line this up with the lyric using down strums,

  |Am7 Em7    G|
A lot    like   you
