Mary Did You Know Chords & Guitar Lesson

Welcome to my Mary Did You Know guitar lesson with chords. I had a student in my Private Community request this song and I am so glad she did.

This is one of my mother's favorite Christmas songs and Kathy Mattea does a absolutely powerful version of this. The chords themselves are not hard. There are no barre chords fortunately, but there are some 7 chords. Fortunately for Am7 and Em7 you can play the regular Am and Em chords but you will need to use the B7 chord. There is also an optional walkdown from G to Em.

Let's take a look!

Mary Did You Know Guitar Chords:

Mary Did You Know Strumming Patterns:

Strumming:
1  2 3 4 +
D    DD U

Picking:

This song is very well suited to picking or fingerpicking. For an easy way to go about it, I would do 4 down picks per chord starting from the 4th string and working you way down to the high e string with a timing of 1 + 2 + and then let the notes ring.

Alternatively, you could do a continuous 8th note picking pattern and that would sound lovely as well.
