Welcome to my Free Falling chords chart by John Mayer. I know Tom Petty did the original, but the easy version I’m going to be showing you here uses a capo like John played it, not the way Tom played it. Either way, this is such a great song.
I used to have a lot of fun playing this song with my band and we played this version live and nobody knew the difference to be honest.
I used to play this with a capo at the 4th fret so that I could sing in better being a female, but the original would be a capo on the 3rd fret.
This allows me to show you a pretty simple version using only 3 chords all based around the D chord shape. (See below) John Mayer did use a full G chord, but why make it any harder than is has to be right?

I will be showing your 2 different types of strumming patterns. One is a simple version and the other is a more intricate 16th note strumming pattern. I talk all about 16th note strumming patterns in my Expressive Rhythm and Strumming course.
On the strumming patterns I will be using D for the D Major, 2 for Dsus2 and 4 for Dsus4.
